Circa, a news app, will cease publishing circa now, according to a post from its co-founder Matt Galligan on Medium titled “Farewell to Circa News.

This announcement follows days of drama surrounding the news app’s fate, which abruptly stopped updating on Monday, leaving at least one reader very confused.

But now we have our answer: Circa is dead. Why? Money: Not enough of it. Writes Galligan:

Our mission was always to create a news company where factual, unbiased, and succinct information could be found. In doing so we recognized that building a revenue stream for such a mission would take some time and chose to rely on venture capital to sustain. We have now reached a point where we’re no longer able to continue news production as-is.

[..]

Our ongoing plan was to monetize Circa News through the building of a strategy we had spent a long time developing but unfortunately we were unable to close a significant investment prior to becoming resource constrained.

Odd that those behind an app focused on communicating the news through short, clear sentences are unable to clearly iterate why they failed and instead fall back on jargon-filled gobbledygook to do so. Also, lol: “In the interest of continued negotiations around Circa, we will not be speaking to the press about ceased production.” OK.

Anyway, I guess a couple of years ago everyone (rich investor men with six iPads and two servants and 3 iPads for their servants) thought “news apps” were the future but probably not because in actuality they all suck.
