MSNBC’s Morning Joe, a largely unwatched showcase for a former congressman’s enormous ego, is (still) in serious ratings trouble, according to The Politico media reporter Dylan Byers:

Today, Hillary Clinton embarked on a "surprise" tour of Iowa, which started at a community college in the eastern town of Monticello. There, she spoke to a small group of supporters, and inadvertently triggered what may be the most embarrassing video we see all campaign season when MSNBC caught sight of a mob of reporters sprinting wildly after her van.

MSNBC recently canceled shows hosted by Ronan Farrow and Joy Reid, reportedly because the channel is tacking away from liberal programming and because the ratings were bad. But MSNBC's supposed abandonment of liberalism can't extend that far: Rachel Maddow isn't going anywhere. So if the problem is mainly ratings, that raises an interesting (to me, at least) question. Why haven't there been any rumors about MSNBC canceling Morning Joe, a show with ratings that are just as bad as—and often much worse than—MSNBC's primetime programming?

Yesterday, MSNBC announced the cancellation of Ronan Farrow Daily and The Reid Report, both of which had consistently posted low ratings in their respective daytime slots. The news marked yet another low point in the liberal cable channel’s failed attempts to raise ratings. According to The Daily Beast, it was also president Phil Griffin’s first move in a longer campaign to dampen the channel’s liberal ideology. Is MSNBC really trying to shed its progressive image?
